Ch-ch-ch-changes!

It's official: the Sanders family has moved! Not very far though; although, I wouldn't be surprised if moving here feels like living in another world. We've actually moved back to Paris proper. For those of you who were unaware that we were not living in Paris, consider yourself informed. We've been living in the close suburbs of western Paris-area, basically a 15 minute train ride away from actual Paris. It's hard to believe, but it's been about seven years that we've lived here! That's actually the longest literal place that I've lived in my whole adult life. Even if you're counting cities and not apartments, I only lived in Seattle during my college days for just under 5 years. Our church's senior pastor retired back in January and since then, the church parsonage has been sitting empty, just waiting for some new tenants :) Some of you might be thinking, 'But didn't you guys just have a baby as well?' Why yes, yes we did. Ha! I wouldn't recommend the combo but for a lot of various factors that I won't really get into, this is the timing that we got.

Here's a few little factoids about the new digs (pics to come at a later date!):

--We'll now be only about a 20 minute walk from the Eiffel Tower (I hear those wheels in your heads churning...you're wondering if we'll have a guest room in the new place, aren't you!)

--Napoleon is buried there (not in our new place, but down the road, lol...)

--Paris is divided up in a circular pattern like a snail (oh how fitting!) and cut up into neighborhoods called 'arrondissements'. They're numbered, so we're in number 7.

--In 2011, the population in the 7th arrondissement alone was 57,786... That's actually more than my hometown of Albany, Oregon ! (And the 7th is considered to be one of the less populated Paris neighborhoods!) Compare that to the surface area of the two places and the 7th arrondissement is more than 10 times smaller than Albany! (4.09 square kilometers compared to 45.97)

--It is stinking rich. One of the richest in Paris. But you might not know that just by walking around. It is a place of old money; people have been wealthy since the beginning of time and apparently don't feel the need to flash their bling around.

--This follows my last point, but since the 17th century, it has been home to the French upper class and aristocracy.

--There are a ridiculous amount of public demonstrations that take over the street our new place will be located on. Yes, my husband has told me before that he couldn't get back home right away because of the tear gas lingering in the streets!

--The place was actually a very old home originally which is extremely rare in Paris proper (we mostly have apartments in Paris).  When the church started meeting way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, they met downstairs in the house. They quickly outgrew the location and added a ginormous room onto the front of the house. Today, the first two levels of the house are used for church purposes and the upper two make up the church parsonage.

--This follows my previous point: we'll be living on site! This should be an interesting adventure full of advantages and challenges as well.

--And I'll just end on this: there's no yard but one of the little known gems of the parsonage is that it has a roof top terrace....lounge chair and chilled drink, I hear you calling my name...

Home Tour: The Bathroom

Ah...yes. Everybody's fav spot: the bathroom. Just kidding. You might notice that there is one thing noticeably lacking in ours (hint: it starts with a T and it's not me!). That's because we have what we like to affectionately call "The John." Our toilet is so special that we have a whole other room for it... Haha it's a European thing I think.

Here she be in all her back in the day glory:
(Matt's still working on his model face)

Sorry the pics aren't super clear--it's such a small room that getting a 'wide angle' shot just wasn't happening....
The white behind the dryer is actually a door originally leading to the kitchen that was blocked off by the owners at some point. Too bad...could have made for some great practical jokes from the kitchen...

To Matt's profound relief, it was blocked off and made for the perfect laundry nook. There's actually a pull out drawer in between the front loading washer and dryer (which my smart in-laws passed on to us at the beginning of the move) which serves to stabilize the dryer on top and provides an instant folding/sorting shelf. I love it because it makes loading dry clothes out of the dryer and into the laundry basket (on top) super fast and easy (a great thing for a lazy butt like me).

I can't begin to tell you how much I hated the bathroom tile before. I think it was borderline obsessional. So in order to preserve his wife's sanity, Matt asked the landlords if we could paint the wall tiles (paint is getting so sophisticated these days!). After reassuring them that we weren't thinking lime green or barbie pink, I got to work painting my bathroom world white. Of course that led to more problems because now suddenly I noticed that the walls above the tile weren't actually white but really more a dirty cream color. I'm telling you--I've got a problem. So now I buy dark gray bathroom paint and slap some of that up there. Much better. That and a shower curtain (compliments of my parents who actually managed to bring both the curtain and the adjustable curtain rod in their suitcases!)...

...and suddenly my butt-ugly bathroom was transformed into a very relaxing, non-obsessional space! Ahh, the power of decorating.

We didn't have a place for a hand towel either so I popped up a stick-on hook onto the wall that's been working great for us ever since!

And then for a bit more added practicality we sneaked in a few more laundry tools. The metal iron/ironing board holder is actually one I randomly chanced across at a yard sale last spring...

And there you have it: our salle de bain

A little drama for your life

I'm back! Happy 2013 everyone! If the beginning of the new calendar year is a time for reflection, then how much more so maternity leave. Heck that's just about all you're authorized to do really. I, for one, have learned a few things about myself. For instance, I am way too addicted to Pinterest. I'm sure that psychologists will come up with a name for the condition one of these days. I also now understand why house arrest really is a sucky punishment (don't kill me but I used to think "That's not so bad"...not sure Paul, Queen Liliuokalani, or Aung San Suu Kyi would agree with me...). But my crowning self insight is the realization that I apparently must have a deep seeded desire to create havoc and mayhem in my life when I feel it is slightly lacking in outside input.

Take today's lunch for example. All is going well; I've got soup heating on the stove when I smell something funny. This is not such a rare occurrence in my kitchen so it takes me awhile to investigate. There is a fire under my big soup pot. My first thought is literally, "How in the world does a stainless steel pot catch on fire?"

It takes a bit for my genius IQ to kick in but I do realize that there is something under my big pot and on top of the hot gas burner. It's a cork hot pad. Under my soup. You see, apparently last night when I had set the freshly made soup on the counter (on top of a cork trivet of course) the cork decided to stick to the underside of the pot while being transferred to the fridge. The mooch that it is clung on for another free ride right onto my burner...

Matt and I then followed our family emergency fire plan to the T:
  1. Get Matt's attention with lots of "hmm....oh shoot. Oh man. Oh shoooot!"
  2. Throw dish towel onto flaming stove while convincing Matt that dowsing it with water is not the solution. (before you judge, know that yours truly did that a couple of years ago, thus how I "found out" that it's not the world's greatest idea...)
  3. Matt runs in with giant beach towel which helps quell majority of flames.
  4. Take picture of burning stove for the blog.

5.   Peek under towel only to discover stove is still on fire.
6.   More frantic snuffing.
7.   Take a pic of the ensuing mess.

8.  Eat slightly charcoally soup and think about alternate vacation destination plans for this summer :)

Home sweet home

Home tour: The Living Room
I thought I'd give you a little peak into our apartment living room (yes, I'm soo one of those people: the nosy kind who are just dying to know what the inside of your home looks like. Consider this as me giving back to all the other snoopy people like me out there.)

A little background on our humble 'chez nous':
  • We moved here this past October after living 2ish years in our last place
  • It's 55 square meters (aka 592 sq ft) but if you think that's small, our last place was 39 sq meters (419 sq ft), so we're officially loving the "spaciousness" of the new digs.
  • We were living in Paris proper before and now we're just outside in the close suburbs.
  • Living in inner city Paris is actually much more expensive than living in the burbs.
  • There are still many, many things that I'd like to add and do to our little living room that our tight (okay, lets be honest, nonexistent) funds do not allow at this time. Woot woot for creativity.

Okay, well here she be! This is what the living room looked like shortly after moving day last October:

See the purple wall? Now I want to make it clear that I am in no way anti-purple. It's actually a very 'in' color in Paris right now. I'm just not sure I want a living room that's cooler than I am, that's all...

We didn't exactly have furniture right from the get go...

Here's what happened to all that purple paper...

And here's what it looks like presently... (see I had to put in all the before pics so that you'd maybe think it looks a little better now...)

Still working on the art of chalkboarding... if you guys know any ways to get a cleaner erase do share!

Let's not forget Fifi the French Feline's little corner as well...

That's it for now! More mini tours in the future to come!
