Uproar outside

Breaking news: as I am writing this there is a political rally going on just outside our front door. Matt is actually snapping pics as we speak...

Let me back up a bit though. So here we were, Matt, I, and a friend of his from college saying our goodbyes and wishing her 'bon voyage' when Matt, great husband that he his offered to help her carry her bags downstairs and then run back upstairs to take the trash out. As he comes back up he tells me to grab some shoes and come take a look; there's a big demonstration going on outside.

Being a big proponent of laziness I throw on Matt's slippers and run down the stairs, trash bag in hand. Hearing the drums just outside the courtyard, I crack the door slightly ajar, expecting to see rows of protesters marching down the street fully taking advantage of their right to be outraged in France. But I can't see anything because there's this big black man standing in my way, blocking my view. That's when I realize that it's not going on in the street outside our apartment building but literally in front of our dang door!
The drama continues to unfold as we realize our glass recycling bin isn't in the courtyard where it normally is, but out amidst the protesters...aka wading through this crowd who turnout to be illegal immigrants (in this case mostly African males) protesting France's decision not to legalize them. (Does anyone else catch the irony in the situation?)

I do have to admit the idea of tossing our recycling bottles in with our trash was looking more and more appealing... Yet, being the good tree-huggers that we are we decided to rise above the temptation and make one small step towards a greener tomorrow and venture outside. So picture the scene: here we are, two whities in amidst a huge group of illegal aliens, one wearing mens bathroom slippers, attempting to make the 100 yards to the nearest recycling bin.... Now if that isn't environmental heroism in the face of protesting randomness, I don't know what is... Only in France folks...

They were protesting France's decision not to legalize them after years of working illegally here! :)
